This August, Cancer Council ACT is urging Canberrans to give to the Daffodil Day Appeal to fund life-saving cancer research.

The Daffodil Day Appeal will take place throughout August, culminating in Daffodil Day on Thursday 25 August 2022.

2022 marks thirty-six years of Daffodil Day, with all funds raised supporting vital cancer research. Cancer Council ACT have invested over $2 million in local, world-class cancer research since 2013. This makes up part of the $290 million Cancer Council and its investment partners have provided across the country since 2016, making the organisation the largest independent funder of cancer research in the country.

Thanks to investment in research, amazing advancements have been made in cancer prevention, screening and treatment - helping to increase survival rates from 49 per cent in the 1980s to around 70 per cent today.

Local cancer researcher Dr Anukriti Mathur states, “Funding cancer research is important because unless we understand the root cause of the disease, we can’t develop better diagnostics or therapies.”

Dr Mathur was selected as one of the Cancer Council ACT Research Grant recipients for 2022. Her project is investigating the role of immune proteins in preventing and protecting against bowel cancer.

“My research project goal is to provide answers to important questions concerning the causes and development of cancer. This will lead to improved diagnosis, treatment and even prevention of cancer.”

With one in two Australians diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, Cancer Council ACT CEO Verity Hawkins urges the Canberra community to give this Daffodil Day and fund the country’s best and brightest cancer researchers.

“Cancer takes so much from all of us, which is why this year, we’re calling on Australians to give hope to those impacted by cancer by funding vital cancer research that is saving lives every day” Verity Hawkins said.

“Every person who donates, volunteers or buys daffodils this August will be helping us to continue investing in life-saving cancer research programs, giving hope for better treatments and early detection and ultimately, giving us hope for a cancer free future.”
