The SunSmart UV Alert

The SunSmart UV Index (UVI) is a quick and simple way to show the sun's UV radiation intensity level. It divides UV radiation (UVR) levels into LOW (1–2), MODERATE (3–5), HIGH (6–7), VERY HIGH (8–10) and EXTREME (11 and above).

When UV levels are forecast to reach 3 and above, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) will issue a Daily SunSmart UV Alert- this signifies that sun protection is generally recommended because the forecast UVR levels throughout the day may be intense enough to damage your unprotected skin and eyes. The SunSmart UV Alert also indicates the actual time of the day when sun protection will be recommended.

In Canberra from the beginning of August through to the end of May UV levels are typically 3 and above for part of or most of the day.

For a more detailed understanding of ultraviolet radiation and the UV Index read Global Solar UV Index- A Practical Guide.

You can view daily UV levels at over 200 different locations across Australia at The Bureau of Meteorology.
