It’s that time of year again when the Canberra community bake, boil and brew in preparation for Cancer Council ACT’s fundraising event, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea.
Kicking off officially on the 24th May and running throughout June, Canberrans are encouraged to dig deep as they share a cuppa and a chat with family, friends and colleagues, as they know cancer never rests and many in the community need Cancer Council’s support.
Pharmacist, Louise McLean, certainly knows what the impact of cancer can have on loved ones and work colleagues, as just over 12 months ago she looked after her mother with cancer as well as having seven of her staff dealing with cancer treatment for loved ones – all at the same time.
“It was a very testing time for all of us,” said Louise, from Capital Chemist Southlands in Mawson.
“Every day there was someone having to take time off, change shifts or manage appointments and we all worked with each other to make sure everyone was able to do what was required.
“It was incredibly close to home and everyone has a different story to tell,” she said.
Louise and her team have hosted an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea at her pharmacy every year for the last four years and says it usually turns into the ‘biggest afternoon tea’ as well.
“We get a lot of support for the event and it’s great to be able to help raise funds for Cancer Council ACT to enable them to continue to support the local community.” said Louise.
Chief executive of Cancer Council ACT, Sandra Turner, encourages people to register for an event themselves or participate in a local morning tea between now and the end of June, and all funds raised will assist those in the ACT community affected by cancer.
“Approximately every five minutes someone is diagnosed with cancer in Australia and that means more than 1,500 people in the ACT will be diagnosed with cancer this year,” said Sandra.
“Fundraising events such as Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea allows Cancer Council ACT to provide a range of services to support those in the ACT community that need it most,” she said.
